Laura Byrne
My work deals with elements of memory, visual narrative and writing. I exploit ideas of identity through the mediums of painting, bookmaking an Installation.
I received my BA Hons degree from Edinburgh College of Art in 2010. Whilst studying at ECA I received two prestigious awards for Drawing & Painting, The Latimer award in 2006, The Keith award in 2008, awarded by The National Gallery of Scotland, this led to the opportunity to take part in the New Contemporaries exhibition of 2010 which showcases a select group of the best emerging artists in the UK.
I currently live and work in New York City. I worked at Printed Matter, the leading non-profit organization dedicated to the dissemination, understanding and appreciation of Artists' Books for 4 years. This opened a new chapter within my own practice and lead me to start my own Publishing Company, Potatoe Press.
Painting is also a core foundation of my practice. Whilst my painting work is Autobiographical in nature, the execution lies in a rambling of surreal sensibilities. Symbols weave throughout the narrative, creating tangents and possibilities that may seem curious to the viewer, drawing them into my idiosyncratic world.
In 2017 I was offered the prestigious scholarship of: Advanced Resident Scholar in Bookmaking, with The Center For Book Arts in Manhattan, I undertook a year long residency project which was shown at The Center For Book Arts in January of 2019.
Currently I am preparing a selection of prints that will be shown in Puerto Rico at the Puertográfico 2020, hosted by the SGC Council.
Potatoe Press will also be partaking in Endless Editions Brooklyn Art Book Fair, which will be held Virtually this year to keep within guidelines of the CDC recommendation surrounding Covid-19.
Potatoe Press is a publishing platform based in NYC that spotlights projects by Female Artists/Bookmakers.
